The
career planning books you will find here were researched by us and received favorable
recommendations from many of the individuals and organizations we contacted as part of
our research in building this site.
While Amazon.com is clearly the most popular marketplace for
career planning book purchases (and all other books for that matter as they
are reliable, offer direct links, etc.), we strongly suggest that you start by
searching eBay. Ebay's prices are the most competitive by far and
Ebay is also extremely
reliable and very easy to register for, even if you're a first-time user.
Below you will find our recommendations for four highly rated books for your
career planning purposes. Depending
on your particular situation and needs, you may want to consider:

Books
A Fork in the
Road : A Career Planning Guide for Young Adults
by Susan Maltz and Barbara Grahn
Buy this book from Amazon.com
A Fork in the Road is a must read for
any college student or recent graduate who has not yet
honed in on exactly what they want to do. We list this
book first because while it's not too late to plan your
career when you're in your 30s or beyond, the sooner you
get focused, the better your chances of getting the best
chance you'll need to develop your professional skills.
Taking Charge of Your Career Direction: Career Planning Guide
by Robert D. Lock
Buy this book from Amazon.com
This fifth edition book is a bit pricey,
but it does a great job of explaining the concept of
career choices and career planning. We have spoken with
people who say this book has changed their lives. It's
certainly hard to put a price on something like that.
Callings: Finding and Following an Authentic Life by Gregg Levoy
Buy this book from Amazon.com
We like this book a lot. It is written
in a very compassionate manner and what really seems to
distinguish it is its internal focus. We've all heard
the advice about "Do what you enjoy and the rest will
follow," but it's really much easier to fully heed this
advice after reading this masterfully written guide.
Forgetting Ourselves on Purpose:
Vocation and the Ethics of Ambition by Brian J. Mahan
Buy this book from Amazon.com
The good news is that you can prosper
and contribute good to the world. And this is the
clearly defined theme of this book.
Let's be clear about something. We like
this book. (We wouldn't have reviewed it otherwise.)
However, while Brian Mahan wrote this book with a very
well articulated sensitivity towards readers of
different faiths (he's Catholic) or no faith at all,
Forgetting Ourselves on Purpose is clearly going to make
some readers of atheist or agnostic backgrounds a bit
uncomfortable. If you believe you fall into that group,
don't say we didn't warn you.
